The artists in this show use watercolor, inks, and other liquid media for a variety of reasons – some love the risk of not being able to alter the result once it hits the paper. Others have a more formal reason for the process. Some use the medium as a contemplative, almost reverential experience, or for “quiet meditation or being present in the moment”, as Shana Nys Dambrot says. All these motivations inspire these works, and engage the audience with the here and now, regardless of when the work was completed.
“I paint watercolors because they are alive, their blending creating another reality that was not planned or expected. The chemistry of the medium is all about water… in the air, time of day and year, how liquid the paint and if the paper is prewet or dry. For me, painting with watercolor is “high-risk” you never know how a piece will turn out. Water, the flow of life and change.”

I have not been a fan of theme shows, it seems I just don’t do them very well. It might be because I’m mostly abstract and themes are figurative. So, when a friend mentioned the MOAH show about Poppies I initially just flaked on it… then I started thinking… “I can paint a poppy. The flower that I love. The most beautiful orange EVER… that’s E . V . E . R….” So I painted three images of varying degrees of abstraction. From 1. as real as I paint 2. combined into a current series 3. totally out there abstract. AND #1 and #2 were accepted. Thank you MOAH!

The family who bought “The Tree” saw it at the Beverly Hills Art Show and we talked for several months about it.
I’m happy to report that it was SOLD and is happy in it’s new home. I consider the painting one of my signature pieces, not only for its size but for the detail and new explorations it holds.
I used a variety of paints: oils acrylics, metalics and gold leaf. The pencil spirals again cover the image and the ink drips and spirals enhance the mystery.
Thank you to the collector. May you enjoy it for many years.
